What’s fancy about studying fashion design?
There is some glamour in this
Magazines, red carpets, the ‘Who are you wearing?’ questions, Instagram and YouTubers have taken the glamourous world of fashion to an exponential level in which fashion events have become a place where everybody wants to be invited rather for the glamour than the shows themselves.
During your studies of fashion design, you can have a brief taste of this glamour but always with a foot on the ground, ’cause you’re still a student.
Catwalks.
As a fashion design student, you’ll have access to local events or special shows from department stores. These are happenings that not everybody gets an entry.
I recommend you to be involved in these events as a volunteer, sure you won’t experience the glamour but you will see the insights and, as a student, that is priceless. I have been on both sides and it’s more enjoyable to be backstage.
Meeting designers.
If you are volunteering these shows, you’ll be able to meet designers in person because they are in charge of almost everything. So if you’re backstage, not only you’ll meet the creator, you can also learn how he or she works. I recommend to start networking there, opportunities like that are not very common.
Even your classroom is a good place to know designers, sometimes universities invite renamed fashion designers to share their knowledge and experience with students.
Special events in other universities.
We could study under a different system but the love, passion, and interest in our artistry will unite us, which is why it will be normal to receive invitations to other campuses and you’ll be able to meet other students.
Your garments in museum exhibitions.
Museums are mayor support to local artists and are in constant search of interesting elements for their exhibitions, so it’s not surprising they have links to schools that teach art and expose your final project or a special task. Most universities have intern projects that focus on a specific topic so their students can use that for creativity and have wonderful results.
And I must say, having your garments exposed at a museum it’s pretty fancy.
Local newspapers and social magazines.
As mentioned before, you’ll be invited to fashion shows, and local newspapers and social magazines make their money out of these publications by photographing socialités, so it’s easy to appear in one of those editions.
To make your dresses and look different.
Many times I have been invited to a wedding or special event and I see all women dressed alike, same wear but in different colors or patterns, same cut, same jumpsuit or a generic skirt, etc. As a fashion designer, you break those molds by designing something that’s not at a store and stand out in a crowd, and the best is, you don’t have to spend much money on it. I cannot believe the amount of money my friends spend on their gowns.
As social media has grown and earned power, the profession of fashion design, without a reason, has been confused with glamour, expensive wear, street style pictures, and followers.
Being a fashion designer myself, I can tell you that our career has nothing to do with it although some fun elements to it give a spark to this perception. Nevertheless, as I explained in my last article, this job has very little to do with it.
